Après avoir découvert de vieux enregistrements de sa mère décédée, Ami, 16 ans, confronte son père qui nie tout ce qui s'est passé. Elle quitte Singapour pour le Japon afin d'entrer en contact avec la seule personne qui sait où se trouve sa mère, un oncle chauffeur de taxi cynique qui a déménagé à Tokyo. Ensemble, ils entreprennent un voyage vers la ville natale de la famille, dans la région côtière du nord-est du Japon, afin d'élucider le mystère de la disparition de sa mère.
